Beyond the Casino Floor: San Manuel Highlights Tribal Gaming’s Economic Impact

The federally recognized American Indian tribe and sovereign nation of Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation wants to convince Californians to look at tribal gaming from a different angle. Namely, not a perspective that focuses on slot machines or casino tables, but on the jobs, wages, taxes, and local spending tied to an industry that is expected to generate no less than $26.5 billion in economic output across the state this year alone. Committed to California In this regard, the tribe decided to launch a new public awareness campaign this week called Committed to California. By relying on outdoor advertising, digital media and print placements to highlight the broader economic role of tribal gaming, the campaign directs people to TribesForCalifornia.com, where the figures behind the industry are laid out in more detail. San Manuel says it is the first of California’s 109 federally recognized tribes to launch a statewide campaign of this kind. Where the $26.5 Billion Comes From The campaign’s figures originate in the Indian Gaming Association’s 2026 annual report, which was prepared by Dupris Consulting Group using IMPLAN economic modeling. The report estimates that tribal governments and tribal enterprises generated $25.4 billion in economic output in California in 2025. That figure is projected to rise to $26.5 billion in 2026. The total, however, is not simply casino revenue, as it also reflects the wider economic activity connected to tribal gaming, including spending, wages and tax revenue. The 2026 projection includes about 151,210 jobs supported across the state, $10.2 billion in wages and compensation, and $5.1 billion in tax revenue. San Manuel says its own operations account for $3.2 billion of the statewide economic output. The tribe says those operations support 20,782 jobs and generate $627 million in wages and benefits. It also estimates $208 million in state and local government revenue and nearly $500 million in philanthropic giving since 2001. Chairwoman Lynn Valbuena tied the campaign to the history of tribal gaming in California, pointing to Proposition 5, which voters approved in 1998. “Today, many people know that tribal communities have grown stronger, but fewer realize how deeply tribal gaming contributes to the economic success of our state,” Valbuena said. “Through Committed to California, we’re sharing that story.” A Different Conversation About Tribal Gaming The economic argument comes at a time when California tribes are also involved in several ongoing legal disputes over gambling and tribal gaming rights. In September, the Ninth Circuit ruled that Kalshi’s sports contracts constitute illegal gaming when accessed from tribal land, siding with Blue Lake Rancheria and Chicken Ranch Rancheria of the Me-Wuk Indians in their case against the prediction market operator. Tribes and California cardrooms have also been involved in a separate legal fight over banked card games, with the dispute continuing through the courts and the state Attorney General’s office. Neither issue is part of the Committed to California campaign. Instead, San Manuel is putting the focus on the economic activity surrounding tribal gaming and its contribution to communities across the state. The campaign comes ahead of California Native American Day and is expected to continue through the end of the year. “Our future is connected to the future of our state,” Valbuena said, adding that they have always been committed to California.
