Real-money skill gaming company Topdog has raised $2.5 million in seed funding as it looks to grow its user base and add more multiplayer games targeted at sports fans and gamers. The company aims to extend its business model by developing a broader portfolio of real-money competitions that can be played outside of traditional sports calendars. Topdog’s Games Pit Player Against Player Boston Seed Capital led the financing round, with The Raine Group, Bullpen Capital, Versus Ventures, Spoondrift Capital, and Permit Ventures also taking part. Topdog has raised $4.1 million so far, including a $1.6 million pre-seed round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company plans to use the new capital for user acquisition and developing more sports-focused games. Topdog’s titles focus on real-time player-versus-player competition. Its technology handles matchmaking, player liquidity, payments, fraud detection, and live operations, allowing for seamless real-time multiplayer games. Topdog’s games focus on direct competition, where players make decisions while facing an opponent in the same game, rather than playing separately and comparing the results later. The company’s current portfolio includes Basketball Hustle, 21 Hustle, Tilt, and Pinfall. Basketball Hustle, for example, lets players draft teams and make decisions during a match, directly competing against one another. This format is central to Topdog’s approach, as it boosts player engagement and tests their actual skills against each other. Investors Appear Confident in the Company’s Offerings Topdog has attracted several investors and individuals with experience in gaming and sports wagering. Its backers include FanDuel co-founder Nigel Eccles, Revenant VC founder Ryan Moore, and gaming consultant Dustin Gouker. Boston Seed Capital, The Raine Group, and Bullpen Capital are all tied to the early investment histories of DraftKings and FanDuel, speaking to Topdog’s potential. Aman Agarwal, co-founder of Topdog, noted that the company’s offerings aim to appeal to sports fans who already enjoy studying lineups, matchups, and strategy. With many existing products closely tied to real-life sporting events, Topdog’s games aim to give fans another way to test their skills at any time of day. Topdog is building real-time multiplayer sports skill games that let fans compete directly against each other and stay engaged with the sports they love even during off-peak hours. Aman Agarwal, Topdog co-founder Topdog has also made significant strides in the technical side of multiplayer gaming, carefully managing the matchmaking system to ensure that users can find suitable opponents. These developments allow the company to scale its offerings and address several of the problems associated with real-time multiplayer play. Topdog is optimistic that it can develop this niche and secure a foothold in the market.
