‘Secret Life of a Vegas Casino’ Promises Unfiltered Look Inside Golden Nugget’s Back Rooms

Secret Life of a Vegas Casino, a new unscripted series from the Discovery Channel, promises to open all the “authorized personnel doors only” at downtown Las Vegas’ historic Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino. The eight-episode show—premiering Tuesday, Sept. 29—trains its lenses on all the danger, unexpected chaos and tight-knit camaraderie that are all part of a day’s work in Vegas casino operations. Discovery) “In Vegas, whatever happens behind the scenes usually stays behind the scenes—but not this time,” Golden Nugget Las Vegas senior VP and assistant general manager Cindy O’Keefe says in the show.The series promises to make reality stars out of its front desk agents, housekeeping, VIP hosts, and managers. But if the teaser is any clue, it’s the security guards who will steal the show. Multiple sequences show officers escorting handcuffed guests (faces blurred) across the casino floor. In one moment, a guard appears to hesitate on an arrest until a drink is thrown in his face. But the show also highlights the human side of the operation. In another scene—one worthy of Brooklyn 99—an officer kneels in front of a guest room, castigating his smiling partner to “shh!” and “whisper!” in one of the loudest whispers possible to categorize as a whisper.“We’ve worked together for years,” another guard says during a confessional, to which his partner replies: “probably too many years.” The Unopened Door Astute casino enthusiasts will notice one place the series doesn’t go, however—the casino cage, where cameras of any kind are never allowed because of casing risks.The production began filming as summer crowds returned, putting every department under stress and giving the cameras plenty of real-time drama. Secret Life of a Vegas Casino marks the first time a major network has been granted access to the Golden Nugget since the property’s earlier reality experiment, Mark Burnett’s The Casino, ran for 13 episodes on Fox from June through August of 2004. Secret Life of a Vegas Casino premieres Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. ET on the Discovery Channel.
