The Philippines keeps a hardline stance on illegal gambling, with recent operations targeting illicit venues that operate offshore gambling, resulting in the arrest of 244 foreign nationals. The Philippine Immigration Bureau reported that joint operations between law enforcement, assisted by the military, raided two locations on Friday, October 2, 2026. Authorities on the Move Against Illegal Gambling in the Philippines The raids resulted in the aforementioned arrests, with the first location leading to the apprehension of 110 Chinese nationals, two Cambodian nationals, and one Hong Kong resident. Another 131 foreign nationals were arrested at the second location, including workers from China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar. The Philippines has been actively looking to counteract offshore gambling, with the Philippine Online Gaming Operator (POGO) sector already disbanded in 2024. However, in the absence of licensed operators, offshore gambling operators continue to operate on the fringes of the country, creating illegal gambling enclaves where human trafficking, illegal gambling, drugs, and other crimes take place. Authorities were able to seize various paraphernalia linked to the clandestine businesses, including mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, and computers. Illegal gambling has continued to proliferate in the country, with authorities looking to specifically shutter these enclaves that are also geopolitically relevant to the Philippines. A primary reason for this is that Chinese nationals fall victim to human trafficking in many of these locations. The Philippines has responded by seeking to appease gambling companies.
