Finland’s new gambling regime is set to go live on July 1, 2027, ending the country’s gambling monopoly, in which government-owned operator Veikkaus has had exclusive control of the online betting and gaming sector. There is no limit on the number of applicants and no deadline for applying, meaning that Finland’s new gambling market will have significant competition in its first few years. The Change Should Help Fight Black Market Operators The liberalization of the Finnish gambling market is generally expected to improve conditions for local players. Fierce competition means that players will likely see better bonus terms and meaningful choice between operators. Under the new framework, operators will pay 22% of their revenue in taxes. New arrivals must also compete with Veikkaus, which already commands strong brand recognition.
