The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) unveiled a new responsible gambling campaign. Designed alongside the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), this new campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks associated with sports betting and prediction markets. NBA and WNBA Team Up with NCPG to Educate Bettors The campaign was announced on October 13, 2026, with the NBA and WNBA confirming that it will feature a new spot that will run across NBA and WNBA channels and social media. According to the announcement, the initiative seeks to highlight the risks that sports betting and prediction markets entail. While both verticals can be enjoyed safely, excessive engagement can spiral out of control and have a profound impact on players’ mental health and relationships. At the same time, the campaign will point out the fact that many sports bettors overestimate their understanding of the sport, which often leads to losses. The NBA and WNBA’s campaign will therefore encourage players to enjoy betting and prediction markets as a pastime and not a way to generate money. In addition to that, the campaign will promote the use of safer gaming tools, such as limits on the time and money players spend. The NCPG will help the NBA and WNBA direct players to resources for learning more about the risks, identifying problem gambling flags, and seeking help. This also aligns with the National Council on Problem Gambling’s broader awareness initiatives. Additional details about the campaign are set to be revealed at a later date. Officials Hailed the Campaign Scott Kaufman-Ross, the head of media distributions and partnerships for the NBA, commented on the importance of teaching players about the risks associated with putting money on sports outcomes. According to him, educating players about the risks and helping them be informed is crucial to having a healthy sports sector. Through this campaign, we want to help fans make informed decisions, understand the risk and, if they choose to bet, trade or anything similar, that they do so responsibly. Scott Kaufman-Ross, head of media distributions and partnerships, NBA Colie Edison, the WNBA’s chief growth officer, echoed this sentiment and added that those who choose to wager must be able to recognize when things are getting out of control. By bringing this campaign to WNBA audiences, we can reach more fans with practical guidance on understanding financial risk, setting limits, and recognizing when and where to find support. Colie Edison, chief growth officer, WNBA Derek Longmeier, president of the NCPG board of directors, described awareness as an “important first step in preventing gambling-related harm.” Because of that, he said that he was pleased to support the NBA and WNBA’s new campaign and champion responsible gaming. We’re proud to support a campaign that brings greater visibility to the risks of sports betting and prediction markets and puts education at the forefront, helping fans better understand the potential for harm and the resources available to those who may need help. Derek Longmeier, president of the NCPG board of directors While more details about the campaign are set to be released at a later date, the NBA encouraged struggling players to visit ResponsiblePlay.org to learn more about playing safely or contact the National Problem Gambling Helpline if they are experiencing problems.
