Casino operator Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd says it has held a series of financial literacy workshops for children and young people in Macau, as part of the company’s “Teaching Children Values” programme. The four events attracted nearly 200 participants ranging in age from four to 17, accounting for a combined 450 hours of participation, according to a recent press release. The workshops were designed to teach young people about the importance of amassing personal savings and developing what Melco Resorts described as “smart money habits”, and to provide parents with tools to discuss financial matters with their children. Participants included children of Melco Resorts employees, as well as parent-child groups from the local community. The programme included a “Three Jar Money Saving Concept” workshop for younger participants, and a “Financial Literacy Workshop for Young Generation”. The sessions were led by Dickson Tam, a programme director at Bosco Youth Service Network, and Elaine Lei, a certified financial literacy instructor, per the announcement. Akiko Takahashi, executive vice president and chief of staff to Melco Resorts’ chairman and chief executive, said in prepared remarks: “Nurturing and providing meaningful opportunities for local youth is a core pillar of Melco’s CSR [corporate social responsibility] initiatives.” She added: “Financial literacy is more than just how to save – it is a critical life skill that shapes future wellbeing,” she added. According to the casino operator, its “Teaching Children Values” programme forms part of the group’s “Simple Acts of Kindness” initiative. It is intended to “foster a spirit of service and community responsibility in the younger generation,” the company said. The programme also encourages Melco Resorts’ employees to involve their children in volunteering and learning activities, with the aim of giving young people community-service experience and helping them develop positive values from an early age.
