Macau average daily arrivals at 128k during 4 days of Mid-Autumn Festival

Macau received 512,041 visitors during a four-day period marking the Mid-Autumn Festival, a Chinese-mainland festive period in late September. The average daily stood at just above 128,000, per an update given by Macau’s Public Security Police, the agency responsible for monitoring the city’s immigration checkpoints. China’s State Council designated this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival as running from September 25, a Friday, to September 27, a Sunday, inclusive. The data also covered September 28, Monday, which was a public holiday in Macau and Hong Kong. The latter city is the second-largest feeder market for Macau’s tourism sector. This year there is only a three-day gap between the Mid-Autumn Festival and the festivities surrounding China’s National Day on October 1. According to the preliminary data, the city welcomed a total of 171,566 visitors on Saturday, the highest during the four-day period. In their latest data, the police did not supply a breakdown on holiday-period visitors’ respective place of origin. However, the majority of tourists for the aggregate of the four days entered Macau via the Border Gate checkpoint (224,628 arrivals), the Hengqin checkpoint (98,704 arrivals), or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (93,861 arrivals). The upcoming October Golden Week is a major festive break for consumers from the Chinese mainland, and a peak trading period for Macau’s casinos. The mainland is the main feeder market for Macau’s tourism sector.
