Newly released renderings from Sphere Entertainment illustrate the scale of the company’s proposed $1 billion concert venue situated adjacent to MGM National Harbor. A rendering of Sphere National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Md. Sphere Entertainment is calling the proposed $1 billion venue a “mini Sphere” compared with the Las Vegas counterpart. (Image: Sphere Entertainment) Since Sphere National Harbor was announced in early 2026, the developers have labeled the project a “mini Sphere” compared to the Las Vegas entertainment venue. The latest renderings released this week, however, show that the Sphere would alter the National Harbor skyline and tower over MGM National Harbor. Sphere National Harbor is a planned 6,000-seat immersive entertainment dome covered in LED panels. Sphere Entertainment, fully owned by New York’s billionaire Dolan family, wants to construct the facility on 14 acres of land located directly north of MGM National Harbor. Mini Sphere Looks Big in Skyscraper-Less DC If approved, Sphere National Harbor will be considerably smaller than its Las Vegas counterpart, which accommodates 20,000 people with 17,600 fixed seats. But unlike the Las Vegas skyline, which is dotted with resort high-rises, the Washington, DC, region is not. Travelers flying into Reagan National Airport can easily spot MGM National Harbor; at just 23 stories tall, it stands among the area’s largest structures. This is due to the federal Height of Buildings Act of 1910, which bans skyscrapers in the nation’s capital and ties building heights directly to the width of the adjacent street—keeping most office and residential buildings in DC at 200 feet or lower. Wrap the structure in ever-changing LED graphics, and some area residents are concerned about Sphere’s impact. Some voiced worries about airplanes flying into DCA, as the airport was the site of the January 2025 midair collision between an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk helicopter. As Casino.org reported in July, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is reviewing the Sphere plan. Under federal law, developers must give the FAA the opportunity to evaluate proposed structures near airports to determine whether they could pose a hazard to aircraft or interfere with navigation aids. If the FAA determines the structure height would be a presumed hazard, we try to negotiate a lower height with the developer,” an FAA spokesperson said. Others on social media questioned how one might get a good night’s sleep at MGM National Harbor with the Sphere next door. “People staying at MGM will need to bring blackout curtains,” read one comment on X. Public Funding In July, the Prince George’s County Council voted 11-0 to authorize up to $215 million in special obligation bonds to attract Sphere Entertainment to move forward with the investment. The $215 million commitment includes approximately $130 million in tax increment financing (TIF), county bonds issued to Sphere that will be repaid with future tax revenue generated by the property. Earlier this month, the County Council voted down two proposals that would have forced Sphere Entertainment to guarantee at least 40% of the construction jobs go to unionized workers. However, the council did approve a labor peace agreement that allows unions to organize workers at Sphere once it opens.
