Las Vegas Jury Begins Deliberating the Case Against Tupac Murder Suspect

Jurors began deliberating Monday (Aug. 31) in the murder trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, marking the final stage of a case that has lingered unresolved for nearly three decades. Davis, now 63, is the only person ever charged in connection with the 1996 shooting that killed Tupac Shakur near the Las Vegas Strip and injured Death Row Records co‑founder Marion “Suge” Knight, who suffered a grazing head wound during the attack. They argue those admissions amount to a confession that he orchestrated the attack and armed the shooter; Davis’ defense team says they are unreliable, exaggerated, or taken out of context. Unusual Strategy Instead of seeking to bolster his client’s credibility, Davis’s attorney took the unusual approach of openly challenging it. In his opening statement, Michael Sanft told jurors that “there are no facts to point to Keffe,” insisting that his client’s past statements cannot substitute for evidence. The defense has argued that Davis embellished his role in the shooting to boost his profile and bank account, and that prosecutors are now attempting to turn those stories into proof. Prosecutors contend Davis was the “shot caller” who orchestrated the attack as retaliation for an earlier confrontation inside the MGM Grand. Hours before the shooting, after a Mike Tyson fight at the hotel, Shakur and members of his entourage assaulted Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson, in the lobby of the casino hotel. Investigators say the beating set off a chain of events that led Davis and other members of the South Side Crips to locate Shakur’s vehicle later that night. The state has also outlined the gang affiliations that shaped the relationships surrounding the case. Prosecutors say Davis was a leader within the South Side Crips, a Los Angeles-based gang. In recorded interviews played for the jury, Davis has claimed the crew had ties to Bad Boy Records, the label founded by Sean “Diddy” Combs — an allegation that is part of his own account, not independently proven at trial. Shakur and Knight, meanwhile, were associated with the Mob Piru set of the Bloods, which maintained close ties to Death Row Records. Authorities argue that the rivalry between the groups formed the backdrop for the fatal encounter. (Image: Corjuni) The shooting occurred on Sept. 7, 1996, when a white Cadillac pulled alongside the BMW carrying Shakur and Knight at Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, an intersection east of the Strip.Shots were fired from the Cadillac, striking Shakur multiple times. He died six days later at University Medical Center. Anderson, long identified by Davis as being in the Cadillac, was never charged and was killed in 1998. The jury heard nine days of testimony at Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, during which the state called about two dozen witnesses and the defense then called three and rested in about 90 minutes. They must now decide whether Davis’s past statements constitute proof beyond a reasonable doubt or whether the absence of physical evidence creates too much uncertainty. The verdict will determine whether the only person ever charged in Shakur’s killing is legally responsible for one of the most infamous crimes in music history.
