On paper, Tobia Parisi was a farm laborer, but Italian anti-mafia police say his lifestyle suggested differently. The 45-year-old’s assets included a luxury apartment, a car dealership, a villa once used to hide a fugitive mob boss, and a bar allegedly serving as headquarters for an illegal betting network. (Image: Carabinieri) On Wednesday, Carabinieri officers seized at least €600,000 in assets linked to Parisi and his family in a crackdown on the Sacra Corona Unita, the Puglia-based mafia organization. Parisi is accused of being a senior figure in the group’s Mesagne faction and a lieutenant to mafia boss Daniele Vicientino. The seizure was ordered by a court on Wednesday in Lecce at the request of anti-mafia prosecutors. Bets Behind the Bar At the heart of the alleged operation was the Free Time Lounge Bar in Mesagne, a town near Brindisi in southern Italy. The bar and its roughly 10,800-square-foot building served as a logistical base for the clan and a control center for clandestine sports betting, investigators allege. Wednesday’s order, aimed at eventual confiscation, also targeted a car sales business in nearby Carovigno, including its vehicles. Police say Parisi controlled the business through a front person. Investigators also seized a luxury apartment in Brindisi, registered to his partner and allegedly purchased with illicit cash. In the countryside around Torre Santa Susanna, they identified a villa they say once sheltered Vicientino while he was on the run. Cars, bank accounts, savings deposits, and prepaid cards were also seized. Laboring Under an Illusion The financial investigation followed a December 15, 2025, police operation targeting the Pasimeni-Vitale-Vicientino clan, whose alleged activities extended beyond illegal gambling to drug trafficking, extortion, and loan-sharking. The Sacra Corona Unita emerged in Puglia in the early 1980s, developing criminal interests in smuggling and drugs before expanding into gambling markets. Investigators say their examination of Parisi’s history revealed more than 25 years of alleged criminal conduct, while financial inquiries uncovered a stark discrepancy between his family’s declared income and its assets. Authorities described the crackdown as part of a broader effort to deprive mafia organizations of wealth generated by their criminal enterprises.
