Downtown’s Plaza Casino Opens Aspirational New High Limit Slot Room

Downtown’s Plaza Casino just opened its new high limit room. Yes, it’s aspirational, meaning the player for whom this room was created isn’t exactly the typical Plaza customer. At least not yet. The new high limit room is in the space that was previously Brightside Breakfast & Burgers. It’s right off the casino floor, next to Omaha Bar. When it comes to high limit slots rooms, “high limit” should probably be in quotation marks. During our visit, the average bet among the small handful of players was $4.25. Still, Plaza’s proud of its new space, so let’s explore further. That bouquet of flowers asked us to pass along the message, “I WAS IN THE POOL.” Plaza’s new high limit room has about 50 machines. There’s even some video poker, which you probably shouldn’t play because of the pay tables, all due respect. They’re copying the pay tables in Circa’s high limit room. Please, don’t. There are much better machines on the main casino floor. Here’s a quick walkthrough of the new high limit room at Plaza, featuring our peerless command of the moving image and almost preternatural gift for cinematic composition. Here’s the official quote from Jonathan Jossel, CEO of Plaza, who we just interviewed for our yearly podcast whenever that might be released: “With the new High Limit Slots Room, we wanted to not only provide the newest and most popular games with higher limits but also focus on personalized customer service, such as hotel check-in and a dedicated concierge desk. The Plaza continues to diversify its offerings to meet the changing needs of our guests. We specifically have seen our slot business continue to grow as we are welcoming more higher-end players and many of our longstanding guests have asked for this gaming amenity.” The slots are basically the same machines you can find on the main casino floor. So, why would customers ask for a high limit room? The feeling, of course. High limit rooms give guests a feeling of more privacy and exclusivity. Here’s to a cavalcade of handpays in your future, and by that we mean our future, but if you win, too, we won’t be mad. Having a casino host nearby is convenient, as they can help with hotel check-in, restaurant and other reservations, and they’re also the people to ask about drugs and prostitutes, although they will kick you out for that, so don’t be an idiot. Plaza also touts the fact the new high limit room has “convenient access to an ATM/TITO redemption machine.” It’s just this kind of innovation that keeps Las Vegas on the cutting edge of hospitality. We kid because we love. Jonathan Jossel and his team are awesome, and we genuinely appreciate that Plaza keeps trying new things. They said yes to pickleball. They said yes to bingo. They said yes to Hogs & Heifers. They said yes to giant murals on their hotel towers. They said yes to weekly fireworks. They said yes to Chelsea, the bartender at Oscar’s Steakhouse. To be perfectly clear, we do not advocate vandalism. Plaza is also doing major renovations of its wedding chapel and Hash House A Go Go. They’re also getting a Five Guys. They’re also getting a Big B’s Texas BBQ. Plaza is also dabbling with cashless slots. All the slot machines in the high limit area are equipped with Acres Cashless Gaming, a system that lets players fund their play with Apple Pay and other electronic forms of payment. What else can we extract from the news release to tease Plaza about? “Dedicated cocktail servers provide personalized service to guests round-the-clock.” Um, she isn’t “dedicated” to this room; she’d quit. There is cocktail service, however. “The room will also feature a self-service station of complimentary chilled nonalcoholic beverages.” We saw bottled water, along with water dispensers with various fruits and vegetables inside for flavoring. It’s not nothing, but it’s as close to nothing as possible without it being nothing. Come on, Plaza! Put out Pinkbox Doughnuts. Grab that ice cream cone maker from Carousel Bar and put it in high limit, but free. The hosts can fill up dishes of M&Ms or See’s Milk Almond Caramel candy. Who cares if the homeless come in to raid the offerings? It’s ambiance! They tried putting out bottled beer, but freeloaders ruin everything. “The room’s decor blends classic Las Vegas glamour with modern sophistication, featuring rich dark tones, gold Art Deco detailing and plush upholstery.” News releases gonna news release. “The 2,000-square-foot room can also be transformed into a private event area with ample counter space to accommodate food and beverage amenities.” Now, that has some interesting possibilities for buyouts, but you can’t make such areas private. According to provision NRS 463.0129(1)(e), “All gaming establishments in this state must remain open to the general public and the access of the general public to gaming activities must not be restricted in any manner except as provided by the Legislature.” That’s why if a venue has slot machines, like bartop video poker, and they have a ticketed event, you can just stroll right in without paying. It’s also why some bars that should have video poker (like The Deck at Ellis Island) don’t have video poker. They want to reserve the right to have private events. This geometric lattice gives the space a retro-futurist, mid-century feel, with interlocking shapes conveying symmetry, movement and a touch of vintage Vegas glamour. Also from the news release, “It also has a comfortable lounge area where guests can relax and watch sports.” Don’t do that. It’s a high limit slot room. Go to the sportsbook. Sports noise is going to bother gamblers, so they probably aren’t going to turn up the audio. We believe in the separation of sports and fun. Even the sportscaster thinks you should either gamble or move your ass to the sportsbook. Overall, Plaza did a nice job of creating a new space for players who like their experience a little quieter. If you enjoy some inside casino baseball, it’s worth noting that the owner of Plaza, Tamares Group, didn’t pay for Plaza’s new high limit room; Jonathan Jossel did. Jossel is CEO and licensee of the company that operates Plaza, PlayLV. The chairman and principal owner of Tamares Group is Poju Zabludowicz. Warning: If you say his name three times fast, you may suffer a seizure. The space doesn’t veer too far from the Plaza’s signature gritty vibe, where value and unpretentiousness are king. Or kings. They sort of co-king. You know what we mean. Plaza’s trying to modernize a bit without it being too jarring for longtime fans. Plaza is a throwback to a time when casinos had character. Everyone knows the boss, and he walks the casino floor often. Plaza might not be for everyone (there’s no Cirque show or dayclub), but it’s become a go-to for travelers looking for a place with staff that remembers you from your last visit, prices that don’t give you sticker shock and even a casino area where cameras are welcome and smoking isn’t. Of course not. But, honestly, we visited Cosmopolitan’s new high limit room, and we liked Plaza’s much, much more. You aren’t packed in like sardines. It’s mellow and there’s some elbow room. One of the great things about Las Vegas is there’s something for everyone. We prefer less stimulation. Most real gamblers do. We don’t like a lot of foot traffic nearby. We don’t like things bright.
