According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, authorities confiscated 164 illegal slot machines during simultaneous raids on three businesses in Englewood, Florida. Elsewhere in the state and earlier in the month, authorities conducted additional raids on illegal gambling venues. Authorities Seize 164 Illegal Gambling Machines Taking place on Tuesday, September 29, the coordinated operation in Englewood executed search warrants at several locations along North Indiana Avenue. Investigators simultaneously targeted 10 N. Indiana Ave., 180 N. Indiana Ave., and 624 N. Indiana Ave. Multiple units from the sheriff’s office joined the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) in executing the operation. The sheriff’s office Intelligence Unit, Tactical Unit (TAC), and Special Investigations Section were also involved. It’s not the first time that Englewood was the target of an operation to bust illicit gambling. In fact, 2024 saw an even larger bust, as authorities seized almost 200 gaming machines from two illegal gambling businesses in the area. Back to the current operation, Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman said in a statement that illegal gambling operations have no place in the community. He added that the sheriff’s office would continue pursuing those who violate the law and holding them accountable, while maintaining its focus on protecting the safety, quality of life, and well-being of everyone who lives, works, and visits Sarasota County. Fight Against Illicit Gambling Continues The past couple of months have been quite busy for Florida authorities, as there were several operations aimed at illicit gambling. In late August, for example, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office led operations that resulted in over 70 illegal gaming machines being seized during a raid on several venues on Lockwood Ridge Road. Elsewhere in Florida, other efforts to combat illegal gambling also resulted in hundreds of machines being confiscated. Earlier in September, authorities in St. Petersburg raided two other venues, which resulted in 163 confiscated machines and more than $247,000 in cash. The raids were carried out on September 10 at Action Arcade, located at 6541 54th Ave. N., and The Zoo Sports Club and Grille, at 5111 66th St. N. The FGCC conducted the searches in coordination with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Highway Patrol, and the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco within the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Action Arcade produced 90 slot machines and $142,020 in cash seized. Additionally, two individuals were issued notices to appear in court. Each faces one count of possessing slot machines and one count of keeping a gambling house. Meanwhile, at The Zoo, authorities seized 73 slot machines and $105,265 in cash. Just one person was issued a notice to appear on the same charges as the previous two people. In other news from Florida, Attorney General James Uthmeier has stepped up action against sweepstakes casinos by warning Google, Meta, Reddit, Snap, and TikTok about ads his office claims are operating illegally in the state.
