A single Powerball ticket sold at a New Jersey supermarket has won an $847 million jackpot, the ninth-largest prize in the lottery’s history. The $847 million jackpot is the ninth-largest in Powerball history, with a cash option worth $363.1 million before taxes. The winning ticket ended a run of 35 consecutive Powerball drawings without a jackpot winner. The numbers were 15, 34, 41, 53, and 56, with a red Powerball of 21. As of Thursday afternoon (Nov. 5), there was no announcement that a winner had come forward. The winner may never be publicly identified because New Jersey allows lottery winners to remain anonymous indefinitely. Check Your Tickets The ticket holder can choose between receiving the full $847 million through 30 annual payments over 29 years or taking a one-time cash payment of $363.1 million. Both amounts are before taxes. The supermarket will also receive a $30,000 bonus for selling the ticket, New Jersey Lottery officials announced Thursday. Lottery executive director James Carey was scheduled to present a ceremonial check to the store during a Thursday afternoon press conference. Eye-Watering Jackpot The jackpot had grown steadily since August 12, when a ticket sold in Illinois won $1.04 billion, the eighth-largest Powerball prize ever awarded. That means two of the game’s nine biggest jackpots have been won within three months. “Back-to-back jackpot runs resulting in prizes of this magnitude are a testament to the excitement Powerball generates,” said Stephen Durrell, chair of the Powerball Product Group and executive director of the Kansas Lottery. Although only one ticket matched all six numbers, Wednesday’s draw produced more than one million other prize-winning tickets nationwide. Twenty-five tickets won $50,000 after matching four white balls and the Powerball, while another four doubled that amount to $100,000 through the Power Play option. However, no tickets won the game’s $1 million or $2 million second-tier prizes. What are the Odds? The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are approximately one in 292.2 million, roughly the equivalent of calling a coin-toss correctly 28 times. Americans are also around 15,500 times more likely to be struck by lightning during their lifetime than to win the jackpot with a single ticket. The largest Powerball jackpot remains the $2.04 billion prize won by a single California ticket in November 2022. Following Wednesday’s result, the jackpot resets to $20 million for Saturday’s draw.
