The UK Tote Group has announced a strategic refocus and changes to its leadership. At the same time, the company will scale back its investment in certain products. The Group Is Changing Its Focus According to Tote’s announcement, the group will renew its focus on UK and international horse race pool betting, with a heightened focus on the growing World Pool. At the same time, the company confirmed that it will be scaling back its heavy investment in its direct-to-consumer digital business in other products. Alex Frost, CEO of the company, explained that his team will be working with key partners, such as the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the BHA, and Horseracing Ireland, among others, to continue the growth of the World Pool, placing it firmly at the heart of Tote’s future strategy. We believe there is considerably more that we can do to accelerate this growth by investing to support our pool distribution partners, including the racecourses, bookmakers and our international comingling partners. Alex Frost, CEO, UK Tote Group Frost added that the reduced investment in the direct-to-consumer digital business reflects this new focus. He attributed the change in strategy to the growing regulatory and tax burdens in the UK and confirmed that it will result in layoffs in the digital business. Frost was quick to add that the number of roles being lost will be partially offset by the creation of new ones in the B2B division. While the Tote will withdraw gaming content online, it will maintain Tote.co.uk and Tote.ie as sites for online bets. Frost explained that his team will use the Tote.co.uk and Tote.ie brands to trial new pool betting initiatives and promotions. Frost to Step Down, James Coxon Joins as CEO At the same time, the Tote confirmed that Frost will be stepping down as CEO after 9 years in the role. He will be succeeded by James Coxon. For reference, Frost played a key role in Tote’s transformation after its acquisition from Betfred. He helped the company become an independent operator with strong long-term partnerships with other industry stakeholders. At the same time, Frost was instrumental in the creation of the World Pool, working alongside the Hong Kong Jockey Club on establishing this growth platform. Frost will not cut his ties with the company, however, and will continue to serve as an executive director in 2027, before becoming a non-executive director the following year. I am delighted to be staying closely involved and I look forward to playing my part in completing the journey we started nearly a decade ago to restore the Tote to its rightful position at the heart of British racing. Alex Frost, CEO, UK Tote Group Coxon, on the other hand, is an experienced individual who boasts two decades of gaming experience. Having worked for the likes of DraftKings and GiG, the appointee has built a reputation as a skilled leader. John Williamson, UK Tote Group’s chair, thanked Frost for his contributions and expressed delight about welcoming Coxon to the Tote family. Williamson said: “His [Coxon’s] extensive industry experience, proven leadership credentials and strong track record of delivering growth make him exceptionally well placed to lead the Tote through its next phase of development, strengthening our partnerships, and delivering for customers and stakeholders both in the UK and internationally.”
