Two More Former UK Officials Plead Guilty in Election Gambling Probe

Two more UK Conservative Party officials have admitted to gambling fraud. The couple allegedly used confidential information about the date of the 2024 UK general election to place bets before the date was announced publicly. With more defendants still awaiting trial, the full scope of the activities surrounding the July 4 election betting scandal is yet to be revealed. The Two Former MPs Had Privileged Information Anthony Lee, the Conservative Party’s former director of campaigning, pleaded guilty to two gambling-related offenses. His wife, Laura Lee, pleaded guilty to one offense. The couple’s convictions add two more guilty pleas to a sprawling Gambling Commission investigation into controversial betting activities predicting the date of the 2024 general election. The large number of convicted officials suggests that the Lee family was not an isolated case. The election date information was especially sensitive for Anthony Lee. As the Conservative Party’s director of campaigning, he had privileged information about when the election would be called. However, prosecutors allege he used that knowledge to wager. Laura Lee was the Conservatives’ head of international affairs and also placed bets, using information she got from her husband. This case shows how election betting markets can be especially problematic. Bookmakers were offering wagers on when the country would go to the polls ahead of PM Sunak’s announcement. Such markets rely heavily on information that may not be available to the general public, giving an obvious advantage to individuals with access to private information about the government or political parties. More Defendants Await Trial Anthony and Laura Lee are not the only officials involved in the investigation. Craig Williams, a former Conservative MP and aide to Sunak, also pleaded guilty after placing a GBP 100 ($135) wager on the election date. He will be sentenced separately from Anthony and Laura Lee, who are due to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on October 23, 2026. The overall case is much more expansive, with trials scheduled for 10 defendants in September 2027 and January 2028. The suspected offenses could carry serious consequences under British gambling law. Convictions for such serious gambling offenses may result in imprisonment and substantial fines. The Conservative Party condemned the suspected offenders and is cooperating with the Gambling Commission’s investigation. The October sentencing hearings will reveal how strict UK courts will be regarding the misuse of confidential information for gambling. Regardless of the result, this case revealed the inherent integrity issues of political betting. It is also part of why UK regulators are reluctant to legalize prediction markets, which have had their own share of insider trading scandals.
