A Toronto trucker who told a California court that his gambling debts caused him to join a cocaine-smuggling operation has been sentenced to 68 months in prison. Rakhim Ibragimov, 49, pleaded guilty to traveling from Toronto to Los Angeles in 2024 intending to transport 375 kilograms of cocaine back to Canada. The Defendant Suffered from a Gambling Addiction According to Ibragimov, he was desperate, trying to deal with more than $300,000 in gambling debts. The Uzbekistan-born man accepted responsibility for his actions and described how gambling addiction slowly destroyed his life. He claimed that before he started gambling, he worked to support his wife and two children and lived as a law-abiding citizen. Ibragimov allegedly worked for alleged drug kingpin Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder accused of running a sophisticated drug smuggling operation and suspected of ordering several murders. Ibragimov’s plea agreement does not mention Wedding by name. However, he appears in an indictment that also names Wedding and more than a dozen other alleged associates. Ibragimov’s guilty plea admits he possessed cocaine with the intent to distribute it for transportation to Canada. US police detained him after he traveled to California to oversee the shipment. Authorities later allowed him to return to Ontario, where he was re-arrested by Toronto police in October 2024, leading to the court case against him. His Case May Be Connected to a Broader Drug Smuggling Probe Ibragimov was detained for about a year at the Toronto South Detention Center before agreeing to be extradited to the United States. His time in custody was crucial for his defense team’s bid for a lighter sentence. His lawyer, Humberto Diaz, asked the court to impose a two-and-a-half-year sentence, arguing that Ibragimov spent time detained in Toronto and had a limited role in the broader smuggling ring. The US District Court for the Central District of California ultimately sentenced Ibragimov to five years and eight months in prison, a significantly longer term than the one pleaded by the defense. The sentence includes three years of supervised release with strict conditions and periodic drug tests and counseling sessions. While the investigation mainly centered on Ibragimov’s role in the drug trade between Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Colombia, this case demonstrates how gambling-related harm can push people to serious crime. Unfortunately for the defendant, his story of mounting debt and addiction did not sway the court, and he still received a lengthy prison term.
