A Brazilian court has agreed to grant Stake Brazil a short reprieve from the local betting ban. This will allow the company to operate for a bit longer as the local gaming industry faces a shutdown. Stake Allowed to Remain Operational Until October 25 Brazil just shook the gambling sector to its core by taking a sudden U-turn and shutting down its online gaming industry only two years after launching it. This sent shockwaves across the industry, which invested heavily in the region. Stake Brazil, however, will be able to remain around a bit longer as a federal court in São Paulo just gave it a short reprieve. While the company sought to secure a reprieve until December 2029 when its license is set to expire, it was given one only until October 25, 2026 (or until another court decision). Per the reprieve, authorities may not treat Stake’s authorization as terminated even after the ban comes into effect. This allowed Stake Brazil to return online and take wages for a while longer. However, there are also a few conditions that the company must take into account. During the reprieve, Stake must keep its ID and age verification, while maintaining its social responsibility and AML controls. At the same time, the company may not offer new promotions or bonuses, must keep withdrawals open, and must honor placed bets. Stake welcomed the decision and vowed to comply with the conditions. Stake Is the First Operator to Seek Reprieve While the reprieve provides Stake Brazil with some breathing space, the company will need to consider another legal route if it is to reclaim some or all of the money it paid for its license. For reference, Stake is said to have paid $6 million for a license and to have invested almost $26 million in its business in Brazil. Since Stake holds an administrative authorization that does not guarantee stable regulatory conditions, it is unclear whether it will be able to reclaim some of the aforementioned money. In any case, Stake is the first operator to take the matter to court, setting a precedent for other potential reprieves.
