(Image: Polymarket) Earlier this week, Polymarket US rolled out five-minute derivatives on Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Solana (SOL) and XRP (XRP). Bitcoin and Ether are the two largest digital currencies by market capitalization while XRP and Solana rank fifth and seventh, respectively, by that metric. The new event contracts operate in familiar up/down, yes/no fashion. The debut of five-minute digital currency contracts on Polymarket US arrives nearly three months after the company tweaked rules around settlement of timed cryptocurrency derivatives, including a move to a time-weighted average price (TWAP) settlement over a single price snapshot. Polymarket’s international prediction market launched five-minute crypto event contracts in February with the company’s volume generated in just six months was about $4 billion, but there were flaws in the previous settlement methodology that allowed for results to flip right before the contracts expired. The contracts are resolved automatically, relying on data from Chainlink. Polymarket Giving Traders What They Want Polymarket, one of the world’s largest prediction market operators, is a crypto-native yes/no exchange and digital currency derivatives have long been one of the company’s dominant categories. Outside the U.S., the operator has offered five-minute crypto markets for an extended period. With the addition of five-minute markets on Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and XRP, Polymarket US now offers yes/no digital currency derivatives in five-minute, 15-minute, hourly, daily, weekly and monthly intervals. At this writing, Polymarket US is hanging 18 markets on Bitcoin and 10 apiece on the other three digital currencies. Prediction market traders around the world, including here in the States, are showing a proclivity for cryptocurrency event contracts. Turnover in those derivatives jumped 44x in the first seven months of 2026, indicating that it may be a smart move by Polymarket to bring the five-minute contracts to U.S. traders. A potential wildcard in that scenario is that if crypto currency prices show signs of life following what’s largely been a disappointing 2026, a new bull market for the asset class could stoke enthusiasm for timed crypto trading on prediction markets. Critics Abound Polymarket’s crypto roots may give it a leg up at a time when multiple prediction market upstarts are awakening to the cryptocurrency opportunity set. Industry observers widely highlight crypto as one of prediction markets’ best non-sports growth sources. Additionally, data indicate that a significant majority of Polymarket traders are new to crypto and that the prediction market is their first interaction with the asset class, indicating that yes/no exchanges have the potential to facilitate broader crypto adoption. Conversely, some critics assert that the combination of crypto and event contracts is gambling in disguise and an enticement to part unwitting novice traders from their capital.
