Macau’s 5-star room rate for August fell 6.6pct y-o-y to US$183: hotel association

The average nightly rate for Macau’s five-star hotels in August was MOP1,477.6 (US$182.9), down 6.6 percent year-on-year. That is according to the latest information from the Macau Hotel Association, published by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO). Average occupancy rate for the five-star hotels also dipped 2.7 percentage points year-on-year, to 94.2 percent in August. The survey collected data from 49 association-member hotels, 28 of which are five-star properties. Most of the latter are within casino resort complexes. The remaining association members – in either the four-star or three-star category – include some hotels that are within casino resorts. The average nightly rate for the four-star and three-star categories also saw year-on-year decline in August. The four-star average was MOP1,119.3, down 9.1 percent. The three-star average was MOP929.4, down 8.3 percent. Across the first eight months this year, the average five-star rate was MOP1,506.3, down 1.5 percent from the MOP1,528.9 average cost a year ago. Average occupancy for the tier during the January to August period was 93.6 percent, down 1.3 percentage points year-on-year. The average nightly rate for the five-star hotel rooms surveyed in the January to August period remained circa 6.5 percent lower than the same period in the pre-pandemic year of 2019, when it had stood at MOP1,610.2, according to the association’s data. Across all hotel categories, the average January to August room rate declined 1.9 percent year-on-year, to MOP1,348.0. Five-star hotels dominate Macau’s hotel market. As of July – the most recent figures available – the city offered 26,200 five-star rooms, 57.8 percent of the total 45,300 guest rooms across all categories. That is according to the city’s Statistics and Census Service. The number of Macau five-star rooms was flat versus July in 2025. GGRAsia’s checks this week indicated that over half the 36 luxury hotels at Macau casino resorts had flagged they are full for at least five nights of the upcoming October Golden Week holiday season.
