Clark County aviation officials outlined a sweeping modernization plan for Harry Reid International Airport this week. The multibillion‑dollar overhaul will expand capacity, replace aging infrastructure, and prepare Las Vegas for continued visitor growth and major events. Planners outlined a long list of upgrades designed to serve as a bridge to a future two-airport system, with a proposed commercial airport in the Ivanpah Valley still at least a decade away. There is no finalized timeline or cost estimate yet, though officials expect to announce a price tag sometime next year. Gates to a New Era Reid, now the nation’s eighth-busiest airport, is preparing to increase its Terminal 1 gate count from 39 to roughly 65, building a wing of around 11 Terminal 1 gates near the former Terminal 2 site. Once operational, crews will convert the aging A and B gate “satellite” layout into a linear pier design, increasing those gate counts from 23 to about 33. A new administration building and parking garage will follow, and Terminal 3 will be renumbered as Terminal 2. One of the most visible changes will be a new vertical circulation system at Terminal 1. New escalators and elevators will eliminate the need for passengers to cross a busy taxi lane when moving between baggage claim and the parking garage. Taxi and ride-share staging areas will also be relocated to improve pedestrian safety and free up garage space, adding roughly 330 parking spaces during peak travel periods. Planning is also underway for a new Customs and Border Protection facility and charter ramp on the airport’s west side, intended to better accommodate international private aircraft tied to major events such as Formula One. The airport’s automated trams, which have logged about 2 million miles over a decade of service, will be replaced by new vehicles by year’s end, and a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting station will begin construction next year and finish in 2028. Finally, the A and C gates will receive expanded concession space, additional restrooms, and new food and beverage offerings. Phases of Execution The modernization will be executed in phases to keep the airport operating throughout construction. Several projects are already underway. A new 92,700‑square‑foot warehouse supporting airport operations opened earlier this year, replacing an older building that will be demolished. Clark County expects to seek federal funding for much of the work. Aviation consultant Mike Boyd told the Review‑Journal that Reid is well positioned to compete for discretionary FAA dollars because of its strong project‑delivery record and diverse mix of domestic and international carriers.
