South Korean casino operator Kangwon Land Inc brought together about 150 teachers, police officers and counsellors for a youth gambling-prevention event in Gangwon province, the company said. Held in mid-September, the event was jointly organised by the Kangwon Land Addiction Care Center (KLACC), and the firm’s corporate social responsibility arm, the Kangwon Land Social Contribution Foundation. The provincial education office, police agency and Korea Problem Gambling Agency also took part in the event, according to a press release. Participants discussed how to extend a prevention model used in schools in the Jeongseon area to other schools across the province. The programme included presentations on warning signs regarding youth gambling, early intervention, counselling, and referrals to specialist services. Kangwon Land Inc operates Kangwon Land, a resort with South Korea’s only casino permitted to accept locals. The complex opened in 2000 at a former coal mining zone at Jeongseon County, a highland area three hours east of the capital Seoul. KLACC shared examples of prevention activities that teachers could use in schools, drawing on its experience developing educational material and providing training since 2007. The participating organisations said they planned to strengthen cooperation on youth gambling prevention across Gangwon province. The casino firm also said it would support the wider use of school-based programmes developed with partner agencies to reinforce gambling-prevention efforts.
