Workers at Golden Nugget Atlantic City have ratified a new one-year contract extension, securing continued labor stability for the casino’s workforce while negotiations remain unresolved with one of the city’s other major gaming properties. Golden Nugget Labor Deal Wins Unanimous Approval From Workers All employees who participated in the vote backed the deal in a unanimous vote by the members of UNITE HERE Local 54 on Thursday to ratify the agreement, as reported by The Press of Atlantic City. The contract keeps the existing benefits and protections won in the union’s bargaining in 2022 and also includes pay increases for workers covered by the agreement. The Golden Nugget deal is part of a broader push by Local 54 to secure shorter deals with Atlantic City casinos, rather than the longer contracts that have traditionally controlled labor relations in the market. The union has struck similar one-year deals with most of the city’s casino properties this year. Bally’s Atlantic City is the only casino without a new agreement with the union. Negotiations between the two sides are expected to resume next week as Local 54 tries to finalize the remaining contract extension. Short-term deals are looking ever more appealing to Atlantic City operators and workers in light of a number of developments that could have a huge impact on the local casino market. A major concern is the plan to open three new casinos in New York City, which could mean more competition for visitors in the region. Multiple Challenges Could Reshape Atlantic City’s Casino Market Another source of uncertainty is the future of casino expansion in New Jersey. State lawmakers are again weighing whether to put it to voters to approve casinos in North Jersey. This could change the competitive dynamics for Atlantic City properties, since it would mean another gaming destination in the state. Another factor in negotiations remains trade issues related to smoking in casinos. Some casino workers have been pushing for a complete ban on indoor smoking, which could change working conditions and the way casinos do business. Tax policy is another set of unknowns for the industry. The way Atlantic City casinos are taxed could be changed, affecting operators and, indirectly, their workers. According to Local 54, the Golden Nugget agreement preserves gains negotiated previously, maintains benefit coverage at 100%, and raises wages across the entire bargaining unit. The union noted that its bargaining team and staff did great in sealing the deal. The Atlantic City casino bargaining is entering its final stage with Golden Nugget settled and only Bally’s left to negotiate. The results of the Bally’s negotiations will determine whether the union can secure short-term agreements across the entire casino market.
