Farewell After 4 Years: Wynn Las Vegas to Close Awakening

Awakening, the technologically ambitious production at Wynn Las Vegas, has announced that it will permanently shut down on October 10 following a four-year run that unfortunately failed to achieve the desired success. Up to $200,000 in Weekly Costs The production, owned by Wynn Resorts, reportedly cost the casino operator between $150,000 and $200,000 a week to stage, according to Vital Vegas blogger Scott Roeben. The expense became too difficult to justify as gambling revenue was no longer enough to subsidize the resort’s entertainment operations. “Back in the day, gambling revenue subsidized shows,” Roeben wrote. “That’s no longer the case.” Awakening opened on November 7, 2022, in Wynn’s specially renovated 1,600-seat theater-in-the-round, replacing Le Rêve, the long-running aquatic show that closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The show reportedly cost around $150 million to create and was designed as an immersive theatrical experience combining advanced technology with traditional stage performance. Its production included 60 cast members and more than 100 crew members, along with a moving stage, large-scale puppetry, illusions, extensive choreography, and narration by actor Anthony Hopkins. The theater itself was equipped with 3,200 speakers, with two speakers installed for every seat as part of the immersive audio system. The story follows IO, a heroine on a mythical journey involving themes of light, darkness, love, and magic. Nonetheless, the production struggled to maintain strong attendance, with social media images frequently showing large numbers of empty seats. Ticket discounts and showtime changes didn’t generate a sustained turnaround, and the same happened with script and storyline revisions and added acrobatics. Not the Only One The closure is another setback for Las Vegas entertainment venues, which have faced changing consumer demand and rising production costs since the pandemic. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Awakening cast and crew members were informed about the closure during a companywide meeting. Performers were offered the opportunity to audition for Wynn’s upcoming production. The announcement also comes during a difficult week for Las Vegas shows. Cirque du Soleil recently announced that Mad Apple at New York-New York will close on September 5, 2026. Like Awakening, Mad Apple replaced a costly production that ended during the pandemic. It followed Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity, which had been a long-running attraction at New York-New York. New Show Coming to Wynn Wynn Resorts confirmed the closure, saying it is preparing a new production for the theater, expected to debut in 2027. The company has not revealed details about the replacement show, although the decision to close Awakening suggests the new production could operate at a lower cost. Will the new production be able to deliver the spectacle expected from a major Las Vegas resort, minus the Awakening’s expensive commercial missteps? It remains to be seen.
