A football game between teams of eight-year-olds in Florida descended into a mass brawl involving parents and coaches on Saturday (Oct. 10), prompting a police investigation into whether adults were illegally betting on the children. A still from video footage of the brawl released by Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Grady Judd said investigators were examining allegations that adults had been illegally betting on the game. (Image: Polk County Sheriff’s Office) All hell broke loose during the game between the Winter Haven Tigers and Plant City Colts when one parent allegedly struck an opposing coach in the head, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. That sparked a free-for-all that saw adults trading punches while children in football uniforms wandered through the chaos. Video released by the sheriff’s office shows people fighting on the field, with some attempting to break up the ruckus, which eventually ended when law enforcement officers arrived. Investigators say some witnesses claimed the trouble was fueled by gambling. ‘Are You Kidding Me?’ Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd was astonished by the possibility that parents might be wagering on elementary school children playing football. “Who would think that we would have to have undercover investigations at children’s sporting events because they’re gambling? Are you kidding me?” Judd told WFLA. He warned that his deputies would be prepared to infiltrate future youth sporting events to catch illegal gamblers. “If you’re at these youth sporting events, and you’re gambling on these teams, we’re going to go undercover and look for that conduct, and we’ll arrest you quick,” he warned. No arrests have been made, but investigators are working to identify those responsible for the violence. Those involved could face misdemeanor disorderly conduct or affray charges, with additional charges possible if gambling is established. Big Bets on Little Players As extraordinary as the allegations sound, gambling on children’s football games has previously been exposed in Florida. In 2011, ESPN’s Outside the Lines uncovered widespread illegal betting on South Florida youth football games involving children as young as five. Gamblers were filmed exchanging cash on the sidelines, while some games attracted wagers worth tens of thousands of dollars. The investigation ultimately led to a 2012 police operation dubbed Operation Dirty Play, in which nine coaches and associates were arrested on felony bookmaking charges. Undercover investigators discovered that some coaches were organizing bets on their own teams, while authorities estimated that as much as $100,000 could be wagered on a single youth championship game. For now, investigators have not established whether gambling played any role in the latest Florida brawl.
