Two MPs reached out to the UKGC over a Allwyn UK’s new interim chief executive officer suitability concerns. Recent announcement confirmed Phil Walker as new interim CEO of Allwyn. He is set to replace its debut CEO Andria Vidler from September 7. Given this news, MPs Iain Duncan Smith and Don Butler were deeply concerned about the election. The main reason is Phil Walker past experience at William Hill. Walker held senior roles at William Hill for more than four years before becoming chief commercial officer of 888 Holdings (now Evoke) in 2023, following its acquisition of William Hill in 2021. The company William Hill was instructed to pay compensation of £19.2m while Tony Kenny served as the managing director of the UK and Ireland. The fine is the highest ever imposed by the regulator and imposed due to violations of social responsibility and anti-money laundering rules. The chief executive at that time Andrew Rhodes said that the Gambling Commission was “giving serious consideration to potential suspension of the license”. The objection made by the MPs does not seem to be surprising since they have been opposing gambling practices for many years. The £19.2m penalty mentions that the MPs would probably oppose all appointments of chief executive officers coming from a gambling background. The supporters of the appointment argue that even though it’s still gambling, the experience of being with one of the biggest and oldest gambling brands could be considered as beneficial.
