Kalshi is certainly not going to let politicians betting on themselves slide, not even in the case of a House of Representatives hopeful who thought she was too small to even register on the platform’s anti-fraud radar. Well, she was wrong, and this type of lawmaker would probably not always mean the good of the nation before her own self-interests. Regardless, Kalshi is beyond passing judgment – but it is determined to mete out to each their due. Kalshi Issues Another Suspension to Politician The latest enforcement action targets Laurie Buckhout, a Republican nominee for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, who reportedly placed $1,000 in trades related to her own campaign. However, the woman has bet on herself to win, which she saw as innocuous at the time and not necessarily tied to any ulterior motives. In a statement, she made full disclosure and appeared to be genuinely apologetic about her actions: “I bet on myself. Literally. It was a dumb mistake, and as soon as I learned there was an issue, I worked to make it right. Safe to say my career as a Kalshi trader was short-lived.,” she said. Buckhout has settled with the platform, arguing that she accepts the $2,500 fine allocated by the platform and that she will not access the platform for three years. Specifically, Buckhout has breached platform rule 5.17(z), which explicitly bans “decision makers” from direct and indirect influence. The settlement was announced publicly on Monday, August 31. Kalshi has said that Buckhout has offered full disclosure during the investigation and provided all information requested by the platform. Not All Politicians Caught Red-Handed are Contriant On the same day, Kalshi also banned George Santos, a disgraced former US Congressman, who served nearly three months behind bars before President Donald Trump intervened and issued clemency. Santos too had wagered on himself, but specifically on an event that he could manipulate – attending the State of the Union address. He was fined by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as well as Kalshi. Santos, though, has been pointedly non-apologetic about his actions, almost mocking Kalshi about “how long the platform would be around.”
