In a letter to investors on Monday, Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke spoke about the rise of prediction markets and what his company’s role in the vertical had been. Mark Locke Confident That Whatever The Future – Genius Sports Will Be Part of It Locke said that as a B2B data provider to traditional sportsbooks, Genius Sports is in a unique position to benefit from the expansion of the event contracts vertical, specifically those targeting sporting events. Genius Sports already has deals with both Kalshi and Polymarket in place, which further strengthens its position. In the letter, Locke elaborated on how Genius Sports is processing: “We provide official data, settlement, and integrity services to the platforms. We sell data and pricing to the market makers who provide liquidity on exchanges. And through Legend and our wider media platform, we help operators acquire the customers all of them are competing for,” Locke explained, touting his company’s strength in the sector and nodding to the fact that prediction markets are most likely here to stay despite legal opposition. While consumer behavior and the ongoing legal tussle are among the key considerations as to whether investment in this product line is wise, Locke is fairly confident that there is endurable demand, adding: “The distinction is between confidence in the underlying appetite for sports wagering and confidence in any particular platform’s current business model.” Prediction Markets Jitters? No Problem – Sports Betting Remains But there is another advantage that the company has up its sleeve. It doesn’t matter whether consumers would shift or stick with prediction markets, because worst case scenario, they are going to default to traditional sportsbooks, which is another area where Genius Sports is firmly embedded. At the same time, prediction markets have had a galvanizing effect, with states rushing to regulate traditional sports betting, and thus further expand the addressable market that Genius Sports is serving. To Lockey’s mind, there are no wrong answers for the prediction market rise.
