While children’s sports should be all about supporting the young ones’ sporting passions, a recent game in Florida saw the adults steal the spotlight by engaging in a mass brawl. This sudden change of atmosphere led to a police probe into the matter as authorities suspect illegal betting. A Brawl Involving Dozens of Adults Erupted On Saturday, October 10, a football game between the Winter Haven Tigers and Plant City Colts took place. The game involved teams of eight-year-olds and was supposed to be a pleasant experience that supports sporting kids and encourages them to be active. Instead, things took a wrong turn after one parent allegedly hit an opposing coach. Things quickly spiraled out of control and a brawl involving dozens of adults erupted, while the children had little choice but to awkwardly watch. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office released a video of the brawl, which showed that some were attempting to break up the fighting. Regardless, the fight only stopped when the police intervened. After talking to witnesses, officers were tipped off that the brawl might have been sparked by illegal gambling. The Police Suspect Illegal Betting As a result of the brawl, the police have now initiated an investigation to see whether the brawl was truly caused by betting and if illegal betting on the kids’ games happens. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd was appalled by the idea that parents might be wagering on a football game involving elementary schoolers. In an interview with WFLA, he said that he would have never thought that his team would have to send undercover agents to children’s sporting events to see if illegal gambling was taking place. Despite his surprise, Judd remained adamant that his team would not tolerate such behavior and would watch out for illegal bettors. If you’re at these youth sporting events, and you’re gambling on these teams, we’re going to go undercover and look for that conduct, and we’ll arrest you quick. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd As of the time of this writing, no arrests have been made. The investigation continues, with officers seeking to identify who was really responsible for the brawl. Even if no gambling took place, those who participated in the violence could still face charges.
