The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), under President Donald Trump’s second administration, claims it’s leading the “New Frontier of Finance” by embracing “responsible innovation in lawful derivatives.” According to CFTC Chairman Michael Selig, that includes trading on politics, sports, and cultural events, along with the combining of multiple contracts into a single position. Under President Trump’s leadership, America will not simply participate in this new frontier of finance. We will shape it,” Selig declared. “Finance” is generally defined as the management, creation, and study of money, investments, and other financial resources. Selig is suggesting that trading on non-traditional prediction market events, like who will win this season of “Big Brother” and whether the Detroit Tigers will score four runs, qualifies under an amended definition of “finance.” Under Selig’s tenure, prediction markets have also offered the combining of multiple markets into a single position, similar to parlays in sports betting. Selig is proposing amendments to CFTC Rule 40.11, which excludes certain events on prediction markets, including war, terrorism, assassination, gaming, and illegal activities. The commissioner also wants to define key terms and public interest criteria to ensure that politics, sports, and culture trading remain on prediction markets for generations to come. “The prior administration attempted to prohibit event contracts on politics, sports, and cultural events in the name of the public interest – without ever defining what is in the ‘public interest.’ Under this approach, the public is not the judge of its interest but instead whoever is in control of the commission,” Selig said. As for insider trading and inadequate consumer protection concerns raised during the public comment period, Selig said the CFTC will soon propose a series of regulatory amendments for prediction markets to “modernize core principles and listing rules.” Heavyweight Opposition One of the biggest opponents to prediction markets offering the contracts Selig supports is Warren Buffett, considered one of the most successful investors in history. During an interview at his 2026 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting in May, Buffett criticized the CFTC’s support of sports, politics, and culture trading on prediction markets. “If you’re buying or selling one-day options, that is not investing. It is gambling,” Buffett told CNBC. In July, Buffett added that finding value in the stock market is difficult because the markets are increasingly driven by speculative trading instead of long-term investing. “It’s tough to find value when everybody is preferring gambling,” Buffett said.
